SB 867 Illinois Nurse Safe Staffing Legislation!
On August 24, 2007, the governor of Illinois signed SB 867, which mandates that all Illinois-licensed facilities implement a patient acuity (patient classification) system to define the staffing requirements of a nursing unit. Delta HCG (DHCG) provides several approaches to establishing patient acuity systems to meet the requirements of the legislation. Our methodologies incorporate the factors necessary to account for:
- Facility layout and design
- Ancillary department support
- Turnover of patients (admissions, discharges, transfers)
- Education and training of nursing
- Information systems support
- Dependency level of the patient
The methodologies we can deploy to bring a hospital into compliance with this legislation include:
- Use budgeted Hours Per Patient Day to serve as a basis for dependency-based hours
- Evaluate staffing at all census levels to determine skill level to patient ratios (Nursing Assessment)
- Work sample all units to develop observed HPPD
- Collect detailed data using DHCG’s unique 350 plus time standards to capture all documented and undocumented activities
- Compare with
DHCG’s data base
- Patient Classification/Acuity
- Patient to Nurse Assignment (for balancing equitable assignments for all care givers)
- Patient Flow Management and Communication for all Patient Movement
- Bed Assignment and Management
- Dashboarding and Reporting from End User to Executive Level
